Terry Scott, MPA, PA-C, has been appointed to the combined role of Program Director and Section Head of MEDEX Northwest.
Terry spent his early childhood in segregated rural East Texas and moved to Seattle in the 1970’s where he graduated from Garfield High School. A graduate of MEDEX class 25 (1993), he has served as President of the Washington Academy of Physician Assistants (1997-98) and was a delegate to the American Academy of Physician Assistants (1994-95). Terry joined the MEDEX faculty in 1996. From 2008-2011 he served as a City Councilman and Deputy Mayor for the City of Shoreline, WA. In 2011 he earned his Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs at the University of Washington. He has worked as a PA in both rural and urban communities in Washington State and is in his 17th year of practice at the University of Washington Family Practice Residency.
Prior to joining MEDEX, Terry provided primary care to HIV positive individuals at Harborview’s Madison Clinic, and was involved in HIV vaccine research.
Terry has over 19 years experience recruiting, training and deploying a diverse, culturally competent, physician assistant workforce to medically underserved areas. His involvement with PA professional organizations and federal and state service has given him the opportunity to learn, share and help implement policies, legislation and scholarship programs to address the issue of a primary care workforce to meet the needs of our multicultural society.
Terry continues to be inspired by the founder of the MEDEX program and of the rich tradition of service in the Physician Assistant profession. “Having spent time with the founder of the MEDEX program, Dr. Richard Smith, I am constantly reminded that the need for primary care providers is very much the same today as it was in 1969, when Dr. Smith founded the program. It is my intention to continue the rich tradition of service. We have the obligation to ensure that our nation’s healthcare workforce needs are met, by training the best Physician Assistants in the country, who will then go back to the most needy communities and serve.”
Terry’s appointment is effective July 1, 2015.
