Responses and Reports

The following is a timeline of key events regarding MEDEX Northwest’s ARC-PA assignment of Accreditation-Probation status during the first half of 2025. This was the first full year for MEDEX on Accreditation-Probation status. It was also full of changes and new developments; so many, in fact, that it has been divided into two sections: Half 1 (H1) and Half 2 (H2).

January 16

January 16 – Responses to the Focused Site Visit Observations report submitted by MEDEX to the ARC-PA.

January 17 – Dr. Daytheon Sturges named Interim Program Director by Department of Family Medicine leadership.

January 27

January 27 –

  • Site visit dates (May 28-29, 2026) determined by the ARC-PA; communicated throughout MEDEX.
  • Approval acquired to hire consultant specializing in accreditation matters.

February 27 –

  • Hiring process for accreditation specialist consultant initiated
  • ARC-PA meeting date and anticipated timing for Observations Responses review by the Commission
  • Interim Program Director meeting with departmental and UW School of Medicine leadership, resulting in marked increase of institutional support for clinical rotations
  • Dedicated accreditation Q&A time added for MEDEX faculty and staff meetings

March 11

March 11 –

  • Leadership (MEDEX, DFM, UWSOM) Site Visit tour dates shared for all campuses
  • Dr. Carrie Beebout named MEDEX Accreditation Task Force lead

March 18 – Faculty member Bryna McCollum begins spearheading efforts to incentivize PAs/NPs within the UW Medicine system to become preceptors.

March 24-28

March 24-28 – All-MEDEX Annual Retreat: Multi-day discussions and activities regarding MEDEX Accreditation items, including ARC-PA Standards workshop. Outcomes included:

  • Themes for improving internal culture and climate
  • Updated MEDEX Mission
  • Updated MEDEX Program Competencies.

March 31 –

  • The ARC-PA issued 34 citations to MEDEX just as the Annual Retreat week ended. Citations were based on the commission’s observations and MEDEX’s responses to them. Some citations were extremely time-sensitive and were relayed to those able to ensure compliance.
  • Processing underway for compiled retreat feedback regarding MEDEX mission, program goals, and competencies.
  • Accreditation Task force begins diligent work on data collection and organization towards completing the next ARC-PA report (Low PANCE), due July 1, 2025.

April 7

April 7 –

  • Low PANCE Report progress update shared with employees.
  • Report due in October 2025, addressing 22 of 34 citations; work continues simultaneously on this report and the Low PANCE Report.
  • Expectations set for March 2026 Modified Self Study Report.
  • Compilation of Annual Retreat results continued regarding MEDEX mission, competencies, and program goals.

April 30 –

  • First simultaneously sent staff/faculty + student updates.
  • Recent PANCE scores fell below expectations again; multiple factors indicated, therefore adjustments are needed in multiple areas.
    • Determining what scores for the PAEA EOC and EOR exams predict likelihood of passing the PANCE.
    • Month-long course added to end of Clinical curriculum for the 2026 graduating cohort. Part of the course will focus on PANCE prep, and part on the summative exam, to be administered during that course.
    • Summer II surveys sent to faculty, Didactic students, and Clinical students to collect data on perceptions of Summer II, and how it might be changed to better prepare students for the standardized exams they will face in Clinical year as well as the PANCE.

May 8 – MEDEX Student Town Hall – Spring; employees strongly advised to attend.

May 26 –

  • Form supplied for employees and students to submit questions and feedback regarding MEDEX accreditation.
  • PAEA End of Curriculum (EOC) exam now to be taken as part of student summative testing; those with scores below passing sent to mandatory remediation.
  • Changes made to the remediation process, with the goal of improving outcomes on both the EOC retest and the PANCE. Students required to complete PANCE practice questions, achieving a minimum score, prior to being permitted to sit for the EOC retest.
  • Expectations set for pending surveys being developed to collect important information for upcoming ARC-PA accreditation reports due in October 2025 and March 2026.
  • Additional details supplied regarding the modified Self-Study Report (mSSR) (March 2026).
  • Overview and recording of Spring Town Hall provided.
