Rural Behavioral Health Workforce: A State-Level Analysis

Abstract

Tracking trends in the rural health care workforce is critical for identifying potential gaps and developing targeted solutions to ensure an optimal supply of health professionals to care for rural communities. This project will describe each state’s behavioral health workforce supply, including psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, social workers, and counselors, in each state’s rural and urban counties. State and local governments, organizations, and advocates may utilize this data to describe the rural workforce in their state, with comparisons to the rural and urban workforce supply nationally.

A number of states are currently available. Additional states will be added soon.
