The productivity of nurse practitioners and physician assistants in primary care, measured by number of clinic visits per full-time equivalent, has increased over time according to a recent study in the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. The authors concluded that national efforts to project primary care workforce supply should account for this change in productivity, which may mitigate concerns about primary care physician shortages.
