Leadership and Participation

UW FMIG is a student-led organization. Student leaders are volunteers who decide which projects the group will tackle each quarter. They are the driving force behind the development, implementation, and maintenance of any new projects and partnerships, with support from faculty and staff.

FMIG meetings are open to everyone and held monthly each quarter, except for summer. Want to stay up to date with FMIG? Join the FMIG listserv!

Becoming an FMIG Leader
Being a leader doesn’t have to be a large commitment of time and energy; it really depends on the type of project you get involved with. To get involved, you can: attend a monthly FMIG meeting, talk to other leaders, or contact FMIG staff advisor Alisse Cassell (alisse@uw.edu).

Leader Responsibilities
Responsibilities of leaders vary from project to project, but here is a basic outline of a leader’s responsibility by project type:

One-Time Events

Before the event

  • Invite guests or instructors (physicians for workshops or panels, residencies, etc.)
  • Create an RSVP form (such as WeJoinIn) and promote event to classmates via email, Teams, Slack, and other mediums
  • Reserve a room or space
  • Plan and order food for the event, if applicable
  • Assist in ordering supplies, if applicable

Day of the event

  • Help set up food
  • Help prepare supplies
  • Help ensure instructor(s)/guest(s)
  • Welcome guests/open event
  • Lead event clean up

After the Event

  • Prepare and send thank-you letters and evaluation results to guests/instructors, if applicable
  • Submit any receipts to FMIG staff for reimbursement

Recurring Events/Programs
Responsibilities vary greatly and require more commitment than one-time events. In general, leaders are responsible for inviting guests and participants, promoting the opportunity to classmates, providing event support, and coordinating supplies/food.
