Understanding the Impacts of Family Physicians Who Provide Obstetric Services on Community Birth Outcomes

Description:

As the number of family physicians (FPs) providing obstetric services (OB) decreases over time, it is important to understand the potential impact this could have on differences in birth outcomes across populations. This study will describe the availability of OB care by FPs and its impact on low birthweight rates and preterm birth rates (among other birth outcomes) by county over a ten-year period. We will also compare differences in birth outcomes between FPs who provide OB care and certified nurse midwives and obstetricians. Study findings can help support OB workforce development in specific communities with no or very little access to OB care, helping to address gaps in maternity care in the United States.
