Rural C-Sections and Family Physicians

This project provided information on how physician training, community specialty mix and other factors are related to the provision of c-sections in rural communities. We examined the percentage of the c-sections performed on rural service area residents that were done in small rural hospitals, whether family physicians did most of these procedures in rural hospitals where there are no obstetricians, their competence in performing c-sections, and factors associated with their performance of this procedure. Data were obtained through Computerized Hospital Discharge Database (CHARS) inpatient hospital abstracts supplemented by a telephone survey of all Washington State rural hospitals and a mail survey of rural physicians.
