Do State Regulations Affect Pharmacist Workforce Supply and Employment Across Practice Settings?
Description:
The U.S. faces a growing shortage of primary care providers alongside increasing demand for medication optimization, chronic disease management, and preventive services. At the same time, projections suggest an oversupply of pharmacists nationally. Although pharmacists have the training to help address these primary care challenges, their ability to provide patient care services depends largely on state laws and regulations. Building on our previous work evaluating pharmacy closures and state pharmacy environments, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between state regulations and pharmacist workforce supply and employment across practice settings over time. The findings from this study will help inform whether states with more enabling laws and regulations are better positioned to attract and retain pharmacists.
