Allied Health Labor Supply Response to Wage and Benefit Changes
Description:
Employers increase wages and benefits as one approach to retain healthcare workers attracted by competing offers from other healthcare and non-healthcare industries. Labor economic studies have extensively examined elasticity of labor supply (or the percent change in labor supply relative to a percent change in wages) across industries, yet limited information exists on how the supply of healthcare workers, particularly allied health workers, changes relative to changes in wages and non-pecuniary (i.e., non-cash) benefits. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap by estimating the elasticity of allied health labor to inform employers and policymakers who may seek to increase wages and benefits to attract and retain healthcare workers.
