Contributions of Registered Apprenticeship Programs to the Allied Health Workforce Since 2015

Apprenticeships have been shown to facilitate successful entry into several allied health occupations while allowing potential employees to “earn while they learn.” There are multiple types of apprenticeship programs, some registered at the state and federal level, some developed by employers, among others. This study will identify state- and federal-registered apprenticeship programs and completions by state to describe this landscape for key allied health occupations (e.g., medical assistant, mammography technologist) across the U.S., and changes in the types and number of registered apprenticeships over time. We will describe national and state-specific trends since 2015 and compare occupation-specific apprenticeship completions with the number of completions in postsecondary education institution programs from the same time period. This study builds on prior work by UW CHWS on the use of apprenticeships for allied health careers. Findings will improve understanding of the relative contribution of apprenticeships to the newly-entering allied health workforce.
