Congratulations to Dr. EJ Smith, winner of the Entering Class of 1978 Resident Innovation Award
We also took advantage of this in-person gathering to publicly announce that Dr. EJ Smith is the winner of the Entering Class of 1978 Resident Innovation Award. This gift, donated by Andy Ury and Steve Tarnoff, seeks to recognize outstanding Family Medicine innovation in the past year by a resident in the Department of Family Medicine. The gift comes with a monetary award of $5000.
Dr. EJ Smith is a mission-driven resident physician who has committed herself to supporting communities impacted by homelessness, abuse, and trauma. She is published in this area in the Washington Family Physician journal and was awarded 1st place at the International Summit on Trauma, Violence, and Abuse and Trauma Across the Lifespan in San Diego, CA for a poster presentation also emphasizing this area of need. Her next project is looking at our very own education curriculum in the residency. She has recognized the need for more service-oriented work by starting the early development of a street medicine curriculum. Through this innovation she will be emphasizing our program’s responsiveness to a diverse patient population with socioeconomic need, which is a requirement of the ACGME. She will also be creating opportunities for faculty and others joining our department, which may aid in recruitment of diverse individuals. Dr. EJ Smith has already shown her potential for being a leader in family medicine and through innovation, she will undoubtedly lift our specialty to new heights.
