Correlation Between Family Physician Burnout and Scope of Practice
Family physicians report some of the highest levels of professional burnout, but no work to date has considered whether burnout is correlated with the broad scope of care that family physicians may provide. We examined the associations between family physician scope of practice and self-reported burnout using data from a national survey of recent Family Medicine residency graduates. For these early career family physicians, those with a broader scope of practice –inpatient, obstetrics, home visits, a greater variety of procedures and/or content areas – had lower rates of burnout.
