These studies were conducted through <a href=\"https:\/\/ruralprep.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rural PREP,<\/a> our HRSA-funded collaborative that conducts research on education and training for rural primary care health professionals.<\/p>\n<p>These five articles report on <a href=\"https:\/\/ruralprep.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rural PREP<\/a> research findings and initiatives to strengthen pathways for recruitment, retention, and education of rural primary care health professionals.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ruralprep.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/jhcpu-supplement-208x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" align=\"right\"><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ruralprep.org\/targeted-medical-school-admissions-a-strategic-process-for-meeting-our-social-mission\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=mailchimp&amp;utm_campaign=article-promo-dec-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Challenges and Best Practices for Implementing Rurally Targeted Admissions in U.S. Medical Schools<\/a> (Schmitz DF, Evans DV, Andrilla CHA, Jopson AD, Longenecker RL, Patterson DG)<br \/>\nThis mixed-methods analysis, one of two articles from our study, \u201cTargeted Medical School Admissions: A Strategic Process for Meeting Our Social Mission,\u201d examined admissions strategies to recruit and select medical students likely to practice rurally as a first step in identifying best practices for addressing rural workforce gaps.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ruralprep.org\/routes-to-rural-readiness-enhancing-clinical-training-experiences-for-nurse-practitioner-practice-in-rural-primary-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Factors That Encourage and Support Advanced Practice Registered Nurses to Work in Rural and Safety-Net Settings<\/a> (Kaplan L, Pollack SW, Skillman S, Patterson DG)<br \/>\nThis scoping review, one of two articles from our study, \u201cRoutes to Rural Readiness: Enhancing Clinical Training Experiences for Nurse Practitioner Practice in Rural Primary Care,\u201d sought to identify effective strategies and research gaps specific to recruiting and retaining advanced practice registered nurses in rural and safety-net settings.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ruralprep.org\/how-can-we-strengthen-rural-opportunities-in-k-16-education-to-promote-primary-care-health-careers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Promoting Health Careers Among Rural K\u201316 Students: A Mixed-Method Study to Describe Pathway Programs<\/a> (Jopson AD, Pollack SW, Schmitz DF,&nbsp; Thompson MJ, Harris D, Bateman M, Evans DV, Patterson DG)<br \/>\nThis mixed-methods study provides a baseline description of health career pathway programs for rural K\u201316 students through a scoping review, survey, and semi-structured interviews with program directors.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ruralprep.org\/microresearch-promoting-scholarly-activity-that-addresses-health-disparities-in-rural-health-professional-education-programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microresearch: Promoting Scholarly Activity That Addresses Health Disparities in Rural Health Professional Education Programs<\/a> (Glenn LE, Simon L, Smith VS, Longenecker RL, Schmitz D, Patterson DG)<br \/>\nThis report describes microresearch, an innovative, mentored research experience for health professions students and residents, originally developed in Africa and adapted for U.S. health professional trainees preparing for rural primary care practice.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ruralprep.org\/a-design-and-dissemination-studio-building-a-scholarly-community-of-practice-in-rural-health-professions-education-and-training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A Design and Dissemination Studio: Building a Scholarly Community of Practice in Rural Health Professions Education and Training<\/a> (Longenecker RL, Schmitz D, Pollack SW, Patterson DG)<br \/>\nThis report describes Rural PREP\u2019s process for engaging community of practice members in improving research on rural health professions education and training.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Davis Patterson also contributed to these articles, which address initiatives to advance health equity in health professions education and training more broadly.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ruralprep.org\/leveraging-collective-impact-to-promote-health-equity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leveraging Collective Impact to Promote Health Equity<\/a> (Ackerman-Barger K, Sandvold I, Patterson DG, Brown KY, Douglas-Kersellius NV)<br \/>\nThis paper describes how the HRSA-funded AU-PCTE used the Collective Impact Model to promote health equity.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ruralprep.org\/who-what-and-where-transforming-primary-care-education-to-advance-health-equity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Who, What, and Where: Transforming Primary Care Education to Advance Health Equity<\/a> (Ravenna PA, Bream KDW, Fancher T, Juarez P, Klusaritz HA, Matthews-Juarez P, Persell SD, Phillips RS, Riedy C, Patterson DG)<br \/>\nThis article provides recommendations from the Academic Unit grantees on ways primary care health professions education can be transformed to advance health equity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We hope you\u2019ll find this issue compelling.
