living with memory loss and dementia, and there is a need to transform medicine for Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. In order to really do this, we must reframe the way we think about the disease. We and our partners have realized the importance of educating our patients, their families, and our community to understand the entire course of Alzheimer’s disease, including its presymptomatic and mild cognitive impairment stages, and the importance of strengths-based programs for individuals with memory loss. We have also tried to model the inclusion of people with memory loss in our programs, especially in The Memory Hub, our community center for a dementia-friendly community, and the venue for this lecture. These approaches will, paradoxically, become even more important as disease-modifying treatment approaches emerge for Alzheimer’s disease.

10/26/2023

Thomas Grabowski, MD, is the Director of the UW Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC).
