There are seven scholarship categories, each named after an individual of particular importance to the MEDEX Northwest PA program and its history. Decisions are based primarily on the evaluation by MEDEX leadership of short essays submitted by the students with stated interests in specific scholarships. Liza Benson was MEDEX Seattle Class 45 student who lost her life in a skiing accident upon returning to her native Wyoming for clinical rotations. This scholarship recognizes MEDEX students who share Liza\u2019s spirit of adventure, and who have plans to practice in a wilderness or rural setting within the WWAMI region.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>From Nicholas<\/strong><\/em>:<em> \u00a0Bringing medicine to those in rural areas and to those who seek the wilderness has been a calling of mine for years. Being able to walk the path that Liza and others blazed before me is a distinct privilege. I look forward to honoring her memory while serving in places that require not only a skilled hand but an adventurous heart. Sue Vader graduated with MEDEX Class 27 and worked for several years with the Whidbey Community Physicians group. After Sue passed away, the clinic and her family established a scholarship fund in her name. This award goes to students with an interest in family practice or women\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>I am honored to have been awarded the 2025 Susan Vader Scholarship. Barbara Gunter-Flynn graduated from MEDEX in 1979 and helped to launch the MEDEX Spokane campus. As a PA, Gunter-Flynn was committed to expanding care to the medically underserved. This scholarship goes to a student who is similarly inspirational and shares a commitment to service of the medically underserved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Caitlin<\/strong>:<em> I am grateful to be receiving the Barbara Gunter-Flynn Scholarship. I have a passion for rural healthcare and I am excited to serve my community as a future PA. Heim Memorial\u00a0Student Support Fund<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Chris Naeyaert <\/strong>(Seattle Class 58) is the recipient of the <strong>2025 Christopher A. Heim Student Support Fund<\/strong>. Chris Heim was a graduate of Seattle MEDEX Class 41. Prior to becoming a PA, Chris served in the U.S. Army for 23 years as Special Forces medic and master sergeant. Chris had just established a private practice when his life was cut short in a motorcycle accident. This scholarship recognizes an outstanding military veteran among the current MEDEX student cohort.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Chris<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong><em>I am honored to receive the Christopher A. Heim Memorial Student Support Fund from MEDEX Northwest, which commemorates a MEDEX graduate and U.S. Army SOF veteran dedicated to service and leadership. During my 15 years in Special Operations Forces medicine\u2014serving with Recon, MARSOC, and Naval Special Warfare\u2014I\u2019ve been fortunate to work alongside some of the most committed professionals in military medicine. This award is a reminder of the legacy I hope to uphold: \u201cForever shall I strive to maintain the tremendous reputation of those who went before me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Jennifer Johnston Scholarship<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>LaTaunya Smith<\/strong> (Anchorage Class 16) and <strong>Yizheng Logan<\/strong> (Kona Class 4) are co-recipients of the <strong>2025 Jennifer Johnston Scholarship. <\/strong>Jennifer Johnston was the program Administrator and Admissions Director at MEDEX for 30 years. Mike Merrill graduated with MEDEX Seattle Class 26 and worked in the ER at Group Health. After Mike passed away, his family and friends established an endowed scholarship fund to support students interested in a career in emergency medicine. This award goes to a second-year student planning to enter practice in emergency medicine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Derek<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong><em>As someone who aspires to work in emergency medicine, this recognition is really encouraging. The scholarship eases some of the financial pressure and allows me to stay focused on developing the skills I\u2019ll need to be an effective and supportive provider in fast-paced, high-pressure settings. I appreciate the investment MEDEX and the Merrill family are making in students like me. Ruth Ballweg, MPH, PA-C Emeritus (1944-2022) served for 29 years as the Program Director of MEDEX Northwest and oversaw the expansion of campus sites to Spokane, Yakima, Anchorage, and Tacoma.
