The second annual Osher Center and Cha Chi Ming Fund lecture in Integrative Medicine was held on October 29, 2019.To begin the program, Dr. Lu Marchand, the Executive Director of the UW Osher Center, opened the program with an overview of the first year of the Osher Center and our goals and vision for future growth and expansion.
This year’s speaker was David Kopacz, MD.Dr. Kopacz is a Primary Care Mental Health Integration psychiatrist with the Seattle VA, and an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington.He is the author of Re-humanizing Medicine: A Holistic Framework for Transforming Your Self, Your Practice, and the Culture of Medicine and, with Joseph Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow), Walking the Medicine Wheel: Healing Trauma & PTSD and the forthcoming Becoming Medicine: Pathways of Initiation into a Living Spirituality.Dr. Kopacz spoke about “Re-humanizing Medicine: Transformation for Healers and Health Care Systems.
This year over 60 representatives from across the Seattle healthcare community, including several departments at the University of Washington, Seattle Children’s Hopsital, Bastyr University, Kaiser Permanente, Swedish Hospital, and Fred Hutch, as well as independent practitioners,including naturopaths, acupuncturists and massage therapists, came together to listen to this integrative medicine lecture. The audience also included individuals who are not healthcare providers or researchers, but are interested in integrative medicine.
“This was a different type of event,” said Dr. Misbah Keen, the Associate Director for Education of the Osher Center.“I have gone to a lot of these types of events, and usually people leave as soon as the lectures are over, but there were many people who stayed afterward.They wanted to connect with other people interested in integrative medicine.It was a great evening.”
With the support of the Cha Chi Ming Fund, the Osher Center plans on this being an annual event.
